The Tea House | Singapore

INTERIOR | ARCHITECTURE | TRAVEL

Project: The Tea House| Architects: Archi-Union Architects  | Location: , China | Photographer: Zhonghai Shen

The Tea House, located in the backyard of Archi-Union’s J-office, is constructed from the salvaged parts of the original warehouse’s collapsed roof. The site was extremely constricted with walls on three sides, and with only one side facing towards a nopen space that contains a pool. The space was further restricted by a mature tree. The design tries to embody harmony by integrating enclosure and openness, delightful space and logical construction and other complicated relations.

Concrete casting after the reinforced bar was completed by manual labor and the final physical effect was achieved. The traces of the timber formwork remained imprinted on the poured concrete after construction, with quality defects such as bubbles, adhesive failures and re-bar exposure present due to the manual construction – defects, however, that are obscured by the unique curved shape. Although there are errorsofin the formwork, planning and manual casting the combination of digital design and low-tech manual construction provided a great opportunity to study the possibilities of digital architecture.

ARCHITECTURE | Inside the Mind of an Architect

Contemporary architecture sundeck

Architect Barry Berkus talks in detail about the design process he used for a client. Spontaneous early design process, as featured in the video below, led to creation of the custom contemporary Padaro Residence, in Carpinteria, California; a fantastic composition of clean modern architecture that prominently features large expanses of glass to maximise wide stretching perspective of the beach and gardens.

The surrounding daylight filled structure is cleverly divided into spacious wings, so that diverse inhabitants may enter and leave independently without disturbing others.

The interior is spacious and bright, yet it remains warm and welcoming thanks to the installation of wood panelling over ceilings, and in the finish of kitchen and bathroom units; the continuity of material successfully conjures a sense of unity throughout the space, and nods to regional traditions.

Happy Orthodox Easter

Happy Easter to all celebrating today. I wanted to share some of my coloured eggs with you. Some were done like my previous post on friday, others were done using rubber bands and stencil tattoos imprinted on eggs which I must say are my favorite this year.

There are many Easter customs in Serbia, the main ones are to go to church at midnight and bring coloured eggs, which were dyed on Good Friday. The first coloured egg is called “ČUVARKUĆA” which means “a housekeeper” and it is kept in the house until the next Easter. Just be careful not to crack the egg – or you could be surprised by the odour.

All the rest hard-boiled dyed eggs are used in a traditional game, known as egg dumping, where each player hits the other players’ egg with their own. The winner is the holder of the last intact egg. The losers get to eat their eggs. This is a common practice in all Christian Orthodox countries on Easter Sunday.

Serbian Easter | Easter eggs

Dyeing Eggs during Easter is a tradition in practically all of the countries in the Balkans on the Friday before Easter Sunday. With Serbian Easter coming up this Sunday, that is what I will be doing tonight trying some creative new ideas I have been blogging about. Common process is shown on the image below. Collecting little leaves sticking it to eggs; and wrapping it with a stocking, egg’s are usually in red or in onion skin giving it brownish colour, once boiled we remove the “masks,” so the leave design stand out.

I will be sharing my finished product with you in this sunday’s, expect many colourful & designer eggs. To check out my last years Easter eggs look at the previous post here.

Hope you all have a great weekend. Sara ox

Travel | Yellow tree house

The tree house restaurant, which is located near Warkworth, north of  Auckland, has attracted a lot of attention since its opening.  Peter Eising and Lucy Gauntlett of Pacific Environment Architects, the commission was a dream come true – being paid to design and build a tree house was the stuff of childhood fantasies. “The easiest part was coming up with the concept,” says Eising. “The trickiest part was to make it hang there.”

“We were inspired by the hanging ‘organic’ form of the butterfly’s chrysalis. This worked well in creating a memorable image during the day as well as a ‘lantern’ effect at night where the skin becomes transparent and the interior glows. It attaches itself to the tree and becomes part of the tree,” says Eising.

The restaurant’s dining room is inside the tree house, while the kitchen  and other facilities are located on the ground. Access to the treehouse is  provided by an elevated 60 metre tree-top walkway.

A striking pod-shaped structure built ten metres off the ground and claiming to  be New Zealand’s only tree house restaurant has become a hit. While the tree house restaurant is open for a limited season – 9 January to 9 February – an extended opening period is under consideration.
